How to update your old firmware based guitar

Follow along to update your old firmware based guitar to the new santroller platform!

Step 1

To begin, you need to ensure your guitar is a pico based guitar. A large majority of my guitars are pico based so if you got yours recently or within the last year then your controller is most likely a pico controller. Next you will want to open the firmware and plug in your controller. The software should automatically detect your guitar and you should see it in the list of devices (Like the image to the right ->)

The correct device should already be automatically selected, but do ensure it reads as “Ardwiino – Rasberry Pi Pico”.

Step 2

Based on which model of guitar you have, you will then want to select the correct device variant. This will be based on the model of guitar body and whether or not your guitar has LEDs in it. This must be correct otherwise your guitar will not program correctly.

Once you have selected the correct device then you will then need to click the erase and configure button. You will likely hear your device disconnect and a progress bar at the bottom of the software will help you keep track of when the device has been programmed.

Step 3

Once the writing is done you will now see a configure button and a reset to factory button. If you have any issues with your guitar then using the reset to factory button will wipe the firmware from the micro controller inside your guitar and allow you to re-program the guitar from scratch. When ready, proceed by clicking the Configure button.

Step 4

You will now be faced with the main configuration menu. Because these profiles are custom built, you can likely use your guitar immediately once you have written it. But if you have LEDs and want to change the colours and add some customisation or even calibrate the whammy and add deadzone if required that can all be handled here. But this is all that is required pretty much to fully update your old controller!

If you do make changes to the configuration of your guitar then Please ensure you save the settings so it writes your changes to the guitar!!

How to change LED colour

Here you can follow these simple steps to customise the colours of your LEDs

Step 1

To change the colour of your LEDs then the first step is to open up the software and plug in your controller. You will then need to find your device in the drop down menu, likely it will already be selected. You will then want to click the configure button, this will take you to the configuration menu where we can move to Step 2!

Step 2

On the main section of the software window you will see a very straight forward layout which shows the fret buttons on the guitar. Here you can click on one of the button sections and a drop down will open and you will see some options.

Do not change the selected LEDs number, this will change the colour of the specific button and will mess around the order of your LEDs.

At the bottom you will see pressed LED Colour and Released LED Colour.

Step 3

Clicking on one of the colour selectors will open up a menu which has several ways of selecting colours for your buttons. You will initially be greeted with a colour wheel, but at the top you can find several other methods of selecting your colours including RGB values and hex codes.

If you want to disable an LED then set the colour to black and this will turn off the LED.

Step 4

Once done and everything is configured, DO NOT FORGET TO CLICK SAVE SETTINGS!

This will write the configuration to your guitar and your settings will all be saved.

How to calibrate your whammy

Here you can follow these simple steps to customise the colours of your LEDs

Step 1

To calibrate your whammy then the first step is to open up the software and plug in your controller. You will then need to find your device in the drop down menu, likely it will already be selected. You will then want to click the configure button, this will take you to the configuration menu where we can move to Step 2!

Step 2

On the main section of the software window you will see a very straight forward layout which shows the fret buttons and other configurable elements of the guitar. Here you will find the whammy selection, once clicked a drop down underneath will appear with some options for you. To calibrate, you will need to click the calibrate button (if you are just adding some dead zone to your whammy then you can increase the dead zone slider).

Step 3

Once you have clicked the calibrate button, you will notice the calibrate button will change to a next button and just above this you will see some white text giving you some instructions to follow. The general steps are as follows:

1. Release the whammy fully, click the next button.

2. Press the whammy fully and click the next button.

3. Set the dead zone by pressing the whammy to where you want your dead zone to be and click next.

Once these steps have been followed, ensure you click Save Settings to write these calibrations to your controller!

Buy me a coffee and help SausageMods improve further!

SausageMods is a small business and it is only myself who does the modding and printing, modelling and other such work. It helps me out if you are kind enough to buy me a coffee using the panel to the right, this can help me get through my day, put some extra time into making new PCB’s for different guitars, improving my designs as well as taking things to the next level such as modelling more parts for the guitars to not only provide you with more customisation but also even provide you with brand new spare parts in-case your guitar breaks and only needs a little part replacing!

With this extra time I can continue to provide high quality guitars, buttons and other parts of these controllers that are old and worn out. I will have more time to breath new life into the controllers from your donations!
